The swallow is a very popular iconographic symbol in the Portuguese culture. The swallow in Portugal is the symbol of Love, Family, Fidelity and Home and Loyalty. The Portuguese artist, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, was the first to represent it in his ceramic work.
